Design Roulette: A Sequential Dialogue

Architectural Association
36 Bedford Square, London

Theme: Design and Geography
Digital technologies and air travel have altered our perception of distance and the relationships between regions, countries, and cities. While the globe may be a smaller place today and many designers in the UK may be busy in Asia, geography still matters. How do architects in the West approach their projects on the other side of the world? How do ideas and strategies from one place affect work in another? How do notions of identity and culture influence architecture, planning, and design? Are new forms of practice (such as firms based in multiple locations and multi-nodal collaborations) changing the character of work or merely blurring differences?

Format: Player 1 introduces Player 2, who makes a short, 5-minute presentation. Player 1 then interviews Player 2 for 5 minutes. Player 2 introduces Player 3, who makes a 5-minute presentation and gets interviewed for 5 minutes. Repeat until Player 7 introduces Player 1, who finally gets to make a presentation and be interviewed. The result is a lively sequential dialogue on the topic of Design and Geography.

Design Roulette: A Sequential Dialogue

Studio-X Beijing
A103, 46 Fangjia Hutong, Andingmen Inner Street, Dongcheng District, Beijing, China 100007

Topic: Design and Time
Everything happens faster in China. Buildings go up, neighborhoods come down, and entire new cities emerge in the blink of an eye. Like all major metropolises in China, Beijing has been dramatically transformed during the past 30 years. But places of historic or political importance—such as the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square—have been preserved, creating stark contrasts between old and new. As a result, Beijing serves as an excellent backdrop for a fast-paced examination of design and time. Does the speed of current projects in the region or elsewhere affect the quality of the buildings produced? Can faster ever be better? How can modern architecture fit into historic settings? What do the buildings we design say about the time in which we live? These are some of the questions participants will address at this event.
